Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak

One of California's highest and most remote AVAs, Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak straddles the Sonoma-Mendocino county line at elevations from 1,600 to over 3,000 feet — well above the fog inversion that defines so much of coastal wine country below. Established in 2011, its steep, undulating terrain keeps vineyards small and scattered, mostly under 20 acres, planted on volcanic and sedimentary soils in a climate closer to true mountain viticulture than anything in the valleys. It's an AVA most wine drinkers have never heard of, precisely because so little of it is plantable at all.
