Established alongside Oakville in 1993, Rutherford's benchlands are built on ancient alluvial fans of gravelly Bale loam, deposited by streams draining the Mayacamas Mountains. That soil produces the region's signature "Rutherford Dust" — a dusty, cocoa-toned tannin structure long associated with the district's Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine style closely tied to founding estates like Beaulieu and Inglenook.
