Howell Mountain

Napa's first sub-AVA, established in 1983, Howell Mountain is defined by a 1,400-foot elevation contour drawn deliberately at the valley fog line — everything above it sits in sun the valley floor doesn't see. Volcanic ash and red clay soils stress the vines toward small berries and thick skins, producing Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel of notable tannic grip and concentration.
