Calistoga

Established in 2010 as one of Napa's youngest sub-AVAs, Calistoga sits at the valley's hot northern head, where volcanic bedrock and gravelly loam left by ancient Sonoma Volcanics eruptions produce the county's widest diurnal swing — days near 100°F followed by nights that can drop 50 degrees. That extremity favors Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and the rare, tannic Charbono, grown within sight of the geothermal geysers and mud pots that betray the region's volcanic past.
